CASE SUMMARY

Exceldor Cooperative, located in Quebec, Canada, recently tackled the severe labour shortage crisis in their region by simplifying the job application process for their farms in Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville, Saint-Damase, and Saint-Anselme. This made jobs more accessible to a wider range of people living in those areas.

Recognizing that creating a CV can be complicated and tedious for many newly arrived immigrants, Exceldor decided to engineer a simpler CV design: a checkbox curriculum vitae. This initiative was widely advertised in local town papers and flyers, making it easier for interested applicants to apply.

The checkbox CV does not penalize applicants based on their gender, nationality, or degree of literacy. It only requires a few checkbox items and a specially designed number text, making it quick and easy to fill out. Once completed, applicants only need to take a picture of the CV with their cell phone and send it via text message directly to the person responsible for recruitment at Exceldor. This approach allowed Exceldor Farms to reach a larger percentage of the available workforce near its farms, thus making jobs more accessible to immigrants.

By simplifying the job application process, Exceldor Cooperative received 400% more CVs compared to last year. In just two weeks, they hired 203 new employees, effectively solving their labour shortage problem. The Check Mark CV has inspired other companies to do the same, addressing the labour crisis in many other fields and industries.

Overall, Exceldor Cooperative challenges the status quo by addressing the hurdles associated with applying for work, democratizing access to jobs and maintaining open and easy communication with applicants.
